Center for Hypersonics and Entry System Studies (CHESS) Materials Research Laboratory The Grainger College of Engineering University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign The Materials Research Lab (MRL) in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks to hire up to two Research Scientists for the Center for Hypersonics and Entry System Studies (CHESS). The position offers tremendous opportunities for a qualified individual who want to be involved in exciting, ground-breaking research endeavors! CHESS is developing next-generation computational tools to enable predictive science in computational hypersonics. CHESS is developing scientific prediction codes to exascale computers, the next generation of large parallel computers whose power demands impose hardware changes that dictate entirely new approaches to data structures, algorithms, and scientific computing in general. CHESS Simulation Development: This area focuses on orchestrating the Center’s code integration effort, combining the physics and numerical capabilities needed for the target predictions, which involves working with emerging computer science technologies and newly developed physical models.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

• Integrate physics models with new computational tools.

• Orchestrate the Center’s code integration effort, combining the physics and numerical capabilities needed for the target predictions.

• Report results at conferences and in scientific publications.

• Work with center leadership to develop strategies and pursue opportunities to broaden the impact of the center’s efforts through additional funding.

• Share best practices with personnel at Department of Defense (DoD) laboratories and meet/communicate with industrial partners.

• Seek opportunities for broader collaborative interactions at Illinois, with DoD personnel, and nationally.

 

Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. degree in engineering, computational science, or a related area with advanced large-scale computation experience. Preferred requirements include postdoctoral experience, working in teams across disciplines, and/or hands-on development experience with intricate scientific codes and software.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
