Open: Postdoctoral Research Associate positions

The Center for Hypersonics and Entry Systems Studies (CHESS) in The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks qualified candidates for Postdoctoral Research Associate positions in Experimental Hypersonics. Successful candidates will join a large experimental effort on high-temperature material testing and reactive flow diagnostics in support to the development of hypersonic flight vehicles for national security and space exploration. Successful candidates will have a primary role in leading research and operations at the Plasmatron X facility of CHESS, the most powerful induction plasma wind tunnel in the US. Successful candidates will become fellows of CHESS, joining a vibrant, multidisciplinary team that aspires to revolutionize hypersonic research. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with passion for experimental research and hands on abilities, who will rapidly integrate into our collaborative and dynamic research teams within a supportive atmosphere and a strong intellectual environment.
Required qualifications include:
- A Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Material Science, or closely related field. Per University policy, eligible candidates must have obtained their Ph.D. degree within 10 years of the start date of the position.
- Prior experience with hands-on laboratory research, operation of complex research equipment, data acquisition and experiment design.
- Prior experience in more than one of the following areas: high-temperature materials, plasmas, laser and optical diagnostics, and advanced material characterization techniques.
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary research team and have strong verbal and written communication skills.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status are strongly preferred.
The Postdoctoral Research Associate is a full-time, benefits-eligible position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.
This position is available immediately, but the start date is negotiable. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
